Pakistan's Monsoon Crisis: 79 Lives Lost, More Floods Looming

A severe monsoon spell has brought widespread devastation to Pakistan, resulting in a tragic loss of at least 79 lives and injuring 140 people since June 26th. The northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has borne the brunt of the casualties, reporting 29 fatalities.

In anticipation of continued heavy downpours until July 10th, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has elevated the alert level for multiple regions.. River levels, including the Indus and Chenab, are predicted to rise, and flash floods are a significant concern, especially in northeastern Punjab.

The current situation is raising alarms, drawing parallels to the catastrophic floods of 2022. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had already foreseen an active monsoon season for 2025, warning of heightened risks from riverine and urban floods, as well as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) due to accelerated glacial melt.

In light of these conditions, the NDMA urges the public to remain highly alert, avoid non-essential travel into at-risk areas, and diligently follow guidance from relevant authorities. Emergency response efforts are ongoing, and public safety hinges on adherence to official advisories as the monsoon progresses.
